IMPACT [ 2 Young Talented Artists ]
BAGGIO & SOPHIE TANGIRA
Urban culture superheroes, gangsta inspirations, dazzling colours. Impact presents two promising artists imbued with underground culture : Baggio and Sophie Tangira.
Spray-cans, colour washes, underlying biro drawings and the playful use of mixed media all play a vital role in Baggio's creative approach, which involves elevating figures belonging to his personal culture to icon status. The artist's vibrant portraits of representatives of social struggle, celebrities, jazzmen and anonymous characters are powerful reflections of his multiple inspirations.
The pistol as fetish object, flashy colours, ultra-shiny surfaces and a particular way of using the support of each piece all characterize Sophie Tangira's work. In her series [ Safe and Soft ], she associates the idea of power inherent in the pistol with its superficiality as an object. Here she uses a toy to seduce the viewer, playing with images bound to modern society in a way that defines the starting point of her artistic approach. The result bursts with meaning while remaining free from propaganda and the work reveals an acute aesthetic sensibility.
