VIOLA PROCOVIO [ Tsukiji Tokyo Fish Market ]
PRESS RELEASE
When I visited Tsukiji Central Fish market in Tokyo I was overwhelmed by the sounds, the colours, and the vitality. Acres and acres of fish and fish products traded in a lively, almost chaotic atmosphere. Each species of fish and shellfish are allotted their own areas, mountains of octopus, rows of giant tuna, endless varieties of shell fish..... 2500 tons of fish a day are sold here, equal to 670,000 tons a year. Amazing!
As always I was carrying my camera; initially the shots were general market scenes reflecting the vibrancy and atmosphere.....too touristy! The images that really caught my eye were the white polystyrene containers filled with numerous fish of all descriptions. The Japanese philosophy of beauty is based on harmony and equilibrium, in this instance perfectly encapsulated in the presentation of fish and shellfish unlike anywhere else in the western world.
As the photos were taken inside the market at dawn, the amount of light and space was not sufficient to allow a homogenous light.....undoubtedly this makes them more intriguing.
